On the Ocean Grove bank, Barwon Coast installed a new board walk a couple of years ago.  This is now being undermined at high tide.

Kate requested photos be taken of the high tide on this day. The high tide occurred at Barwon Heads at 15.10 and its predicted height was 1.87m. The water level when we began at 15.15 was 1.4m and at 16.10 was at 1.3m.

We were quite surprised to see that the tide gauge at B1 was above the water level on Friday am when we did out Phys/Chem monitoring. It was about an hour after low tide, but the tide was predicted to be 0.33m - not really all that low. On December 16, it is predicted to be 0.1m! Rose Herben

I took this photo looking out to sea from Bp4 this morning about 11:30. As you can see the river water is very brown - upstream of the bridge too. I expect there's been a lot of run-off lately. The turbidity would be interesting at present, but the Van Doorn would've been tricky to handle - I could scarcely hold my camera still in the wind! Rose Herben

The usual navigation channel under the bridges and identified with lateral marks implying safe water, a significant sand bar developed which didn¿t give the usual minimum clearance of water of about 1m depth.

There hadn¿t been the water movement to scour the bar over the past two months, a permit was sought from DEPI for a trial sand excavation (dredging) which we gained. The long reach excavator was used, 18m arm reach. The excavation of sand and seaweed was approved to the pre-existing river bed, the harder surface was recognized by the excavator operator. Excavated material was moved up the beach by a 4ed backhoe and placed above the usual high tide line.

The river conditions in the end of last week with some storm flow through the system scoured some sand from the channel though took sand off the east (OG)edge.

That change of condition impacted the operation of the excavator as it could not place itself as near the navigation channel as desired especially at the pedestrian bridge. The excavator works could not reach in under the pedestrian bridge, a limit on the overall benefit. Rose Herben

am attaching a photo taken from the Barwon Bluff (Bp4) on Wednesday 17
July 2013 at approximately 11:10am. (According to "Willy Weather's website,
low tide was 0.7m at 11:23 am).

When driving across the bridge to Ocean Grove earlier that morning, I had
noticed that the distance from the green marker that indicates the starboard
side of the boating channel to the water's edge, seemed shorter than usual.

The following week, I saw a notice on the door of the Barwon Coast Office at
Barwon Heads advising that the channel was currently very shallow.

At the QA/QC refresher training it was decided that photopoint monitoring would no longer take place at Bp3 due to it being so similar to Bp1. All Barwon River EstuaryWatchers have since been notified. Rose Herben

Hi Rose
Since receiving your email, we¿ve been down for a look at Tait Point and also to a few spots along the west bank of the river and to the bridge.
The water is cloudy and an interesting shade of green at Tait Point and at least as far downstream as the boat ramp and jetty at our EW monitoring site B2 (23W), although we didn¿t observe any scum build up. ParksVic have their warning signs at Tait Pt and at least as far downstream as our B2 site. Nevertheless, there are dozens of fisherpeople trying their luck right near the signs along the riverbank.
There are also lots of cars with boat trailers parked at 23W, so there must be lots of people out ¿boating¿. The water seems pretty clear to the naked eye at the bridge.
I¿ve taken several photos of green-coloured water and people fishing near the warning signs if you would like a selection.
Cheers

We estimate that we saw about 50 dead fish over approximately 200-300m along the east bank of the river - just upstream of the bridge. The river water was very brown and turbid, and flowing rapidly. The surf off the Ocean Grove beach was also really discoloured and this brownish water extended out to sea for quite a distance - maybe more than a kilometre. On the other hand, the water along Thirteenth Beach looked clean, but an aerial view would be needed to get the real picture. Ros Gibson
