#5022 11 Aug 2012 Approved Notes: Following a few days of high rainfall there was a very strong current. The fast flowing water made it difficult to accurately measure the depths so there will be greater error in the depth measurements. The current also prevented the Van Dorn from settling on the river bed. It was pulled along in the current.

The water appeared to be very muddy and the turbidity readings confirmed this. A possible reason for the high reading may be to do with the above average rainfall this winter and the fact that much of the surrounding farmland has been turned to mud by cattle. A greater amount of this sediment would be washing down the surrounding tributaries as the wet winter drags on and the mud increases. Also there have been reports of many landslips in the Powlett catchment due to the high rainfall this winter.

#4982 30 Jun 2012 Approved Notes: Fast flowing water in both directions created very turbulent water at about 1.5 metres and so the readings for salinity were very unstable. Measurements were taken on the high tide so the incoming tide was meeting the fast flowing fresh water caused by resent high rainfall.

#4722 24 Sep 2011 Approved Notes: Lost lead weight off Van Dorn after we dropped the foam spool into the river. The string wasn't tied to the foam spool. Despite our pleas Dave Wingfield refused to dive down to get it. We were unable to do the bottom reading without the weight.
Very high readings for D.O. and the salinity readings were higher than usual in the water closer to the surface although fairly normal for the deeper water. We monitored right on high tide so this may have contributed to the higher than usual oxygen readings. Mike Linsell reported that he had never seen so many bait fish in the river so this may support our D.O. results.
Nick Wison monitored as well.
