Estuary event details
Estuary Thompson Creek Estuary
Region Corangamite CMA
Event type Estuary Entrance Closure
Date and time 7 May 2013 14:00pm
Description Hi Glenda & Rose,

Unsure of the exact dates, but it did occur during the recent very dry period where we had no rain. I noticed there was a considerable sand build up in late March with a narrow, shallow opening and a few weeks later (say about 7th April) the creek mouth was completely closed. The creek mouth then reopened but was only 10 metres wide and had a marginal flow (ankle deep) for a few weeks when it was completely closed again circa 26th April.

Then on the 3rd May about 5:30 PM (I know this exact date from hoodie records) with a huge swell and big high tide (1.6 metre from memory) the width of the creek opening was at least 150 metres wide and the ocean was surging down the creek. Small waves were peeling off on both the Breamlea & Torquay sides of the creek for at least 150 metres down the estuary. The foredunes on the Breamlea side were completely washed away leaving a vertical scar and there was only a small area of dry beach sand left between the dunes & creek on the Torquay side. To say I was amazed at the sight was an understatement.

I would have taken images but did not have a wide angle lens with me.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
Geoff.
