Weather Event Following recent rains, the Painkalac Reservoir is at capacity (Barwon Water website). On the scheduled monitoring date in September (11-12 September 2009) EstuaryWatch sites P3 (Coastal Court ) and P4 (The Bend) were underwater, and monitoring from these two sites was considered unsafe. There was little change in the water level in the days following. The attached photographs were taken on 15 September 2009. The gauge board at the Great Ocean Rd bridge showed the water level at 1.8m. Ros Gibson |

Estuary Entrance Opening The estuary mouth was artifically opened by a group of people attempting to create a standing wave. The group continued on with the procedure, even after being informed that it was illegal to artifically open an estuary mouth without the appropriate permit. The estuary water level dropped by approximately 20cm. The mouth closed back over the following day. EW Coordinator |

Unusual/Extraordinary occurrence! Barbara and Dennis Leavesly walked the perimeter of the estuary. The water was noticeably clear, a sign of low pH due to run off from acid sulphate soils. The last monitoring session on Sunday June 10 indicated low pH in the top freshwater layer of the estuary. There are no signs of fish deaths as yet. Rose Herben |
